A total of 13 drivers will represent the 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship on the grid of the FIA Formula 3 World Cup in Macau. Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam) who just secured the FIA Formula 3 European Championship title won’t make the trip to Asia due to other commitments. However, with Felix Rosenqvist (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema), the FIA Formula 3 European Champion of 2015, Prema Powerteam found an appropriate replacement.
After having secured the 2015 FIA Formula 3 European Championship title, Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist had numerous options. Currently he is one of the Mercedes works drivers racing in DTM, on the coming weekend he will start into his first FIA Formula E season and in addition, he also raced successfully in the Indy Lights Series and the Blancpain Series. He travels to Macau with the goal to become the first driver to win the Macau Grand Prix three times.
Rosenqvist will have top battle it out, inter alia, with 13 young drivers who are currently still contesting the 2016 FIA F3 European Championship season, among them the currently second-placed German Maximilian Günther (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema), the third-placed George Russell (HitechGP) and Nick Cassidy (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema), currently fourth in the championship. And with Joel Eriksson (Motopark), the driver holding the lead in the rookie ranking prior to the season finale also makes the trip to the former Portuguese Colony.
The names of seven of the drivers who currently hold top-ten positions in the FIA Formula 3 EC can be found on the provisional FIA F3 World Cup entry list – in addition to the aforementioned drivers Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing) as well as the two rookies Rookies Anthoine Hubert (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Niko Kari (Motopark). Furthermore, Guanyu Zhou (Motopark), David Beckmann (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), Pedro Piquet (Van Amersfoort Racing), Nikita Mazepin (HitechGP), Zhi Cong Li (Carlin) and Wing Chung Chang (ThreeBond with T-Sport) will also represent the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in the prestigious race at the South China Sea. For Peter Zhi Cong Li it will be the Formula 3 comeback, after his serious accident at Spielberg in May he has been recovering from his injuries in the last few months.
The FIA Formula 3 World Cup will be held from 17th to 20th November. But first of all the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg will stage the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season finale in mid-October.
